A pregnancy retreat in Spain is a residential stay built entirely around pregnant women: birth education, movement adapted for pregnancy, food cooked for pregnancy, deep rest, and the company of other women expecting at the same time.
Most women looking at Spain assume the appeal is the weather. It isn't. It's arithmetic. From London it's a two-hour flight and a one-hour drive, so you can leave home after breakfast and be lying down in a quiet room by mid-afternoon. At thirty weeks pregnant, that matters more than sunshine does.
The short version: the second trimester is the most comfortable window. mom'z welcomes women from 14 to 35 weeks. The retreats near Barcelona sit about an hour from the city and its airport, and prices start at €2,450 with airport transfers included.
Because it's close, and in pregnancy closeness is a medical convenience as much as a travel one. Short flight, short transfer, a major hospital within reach if something unexpected happens.
That last point is worth being specific about, because most retreats aren't. mom'z chooses its estates within about thirty minutes' drive of a hospital with maternity care. Midwives are on call around the clock. The retreat leader and coordinator stay on site with the group for all five days. Whoever you book with, ask for the same, and notice how quickly they can answer.
The rest is what you'd expect from the country. Long light in the evenings. Food grown nearby. Enough warmth that lying outdoors is a reasonable plan for an afternoon.
Days follow a rhythm rather than a schedule.
Prenatal yoga in the morning, taught by teachers with pregnancy-specific training. Then a birth class, led by childbirth educators, covering what women actually ask about: labour, breathing, the fourth trimester, feeding. Somewhere in the week there is a pelvic health workshop, which is the session women most often say they had no idea they needed.
Meals are built with our pregnancy-nutrition specialist and eaten slowly, together. One pregnancy massage during the stay. Afternoons belong to the pool, a walk, or nothing at all. Evenings belong to the group.
The classes prepare you for the birth you're actually planning: caesarean or home birth, epidural or not, however you intend to feed. Preparation, never prescription. It's the part women mention most afterwards, and the part that's hardest to tell apart from the outside when you're comparing websites.
Gentle, regular activity in an uncomplicated pregnancy is encouraged by both the NHS and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and everything physical is adapted by trimester.
mom'z runs its Spanish retreats inland from Barcelona, in Catalonia: a traditional Catalan masia restored as a private estate in the vineyards of Penedès, about sixty minutes from the city and its airport. En-suite rooms, an organic garden, a pool. There are also retreats near Lisbon, and occasional UK dates that need no flight at all.
Retreats run all over Spain, coast to mountains, and the region matters less than you'd think. What matters is the building.
This is the thing photographs hide. Rural Spain has a lot of beautiful old properties, and a lot of them are tired inside: thin walls, no air conditioning in a July heatwave, a shared bathroom down the corridor, a mattress that was fine ten years ago. None of that is anyone's fault, and on a normal holiday it's survivable. At thirty weeks pregnant, sleeping badly for four nights is the whole trip.
So look past the terrace shot and ask about the bedroom. Is there air conditioning. Is the bathroom en-suite. How thick are the walls. How far is the nearest hospital. How long is the transfer, door to door.
We hold to a private-estate standard for exactly that reason: en-suite rooms, proper cooling, real beds, and a building someone actually looks after.
Ask before you book, not after.
A well-run retreat will ask about your pregnancy before it confirms your place, will know exactly where the nearest hospital is, and will be comfortable telling you to check with your midwife first. If nobody asks you anything, keep looking.
Two practical things for UK travellers. A UK Global Health Insurance Card gives you access to state-provided healthcare in Spain on the same terms as a Spanish resident, but it isn't travel insurance and it doesn't cover repatriation (NHS guidance on the GHIC). So take travel insurance that explicitly covers pregnancy complications and the cost of care for a baby born early abroad, and read the wording rather than the summary page. It costs less than most women expect, a one-off policy is typically €15 to €50, and we talk every guest through it before she travels.
Most women come in the second trimester or early third, when energy tends to be better and travel is more comfortable. mom'z welcomes women from 14 to 35 weeks.
For flying, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists notes that in an uncomplicated pregnancy flying is not considered harmful. Most airlines restrict travel from around 37 weeks (32 for twins), and many ask for a doctor's or midwife's letter after 28 weeks. See also the NHS travel-in-pregnancy guidance.
One thing specific to Spain in summer: July and August inland can sit above 35 degrees. If heat is already making you uncomfortable at home, the September and October dates are kinder, and quieter.
If your due date sits close to an edge, write to us before you assume. It's one of the questions we answer most often, and the answer is usually kinder than you expect.
No. At mom'z every woman arrives without a partner. Occasionally two pregnant friends book together, and that's the rare exception.
It's the question nearly everyone asks and almost nobody says out loud. In practice the worry lasts until the first dinner.
What women describe afterwards is usually smaller than they expect. Not a breakthrough. The second night, when they sleep properly for the first time in weeks. A conversation on a walk they nearly didn't join. The relief of saying something true to someone who isn't going to tell them it'll be fine. Several have told us that was easier with strangers walking the same path than with their closest friends.

mom'z retreats start at €2,450 for five days, all-inclusive on site: accommodation, all meals, all classes, a pregnancy massage, airport transfers, and round-the-clock care with midwives on call. Flights aren't included. Payment plans exist.
Prices across the category vary widely, and the difference is rarely the view. It's who's teaching, how many women are in the room, whether anyone on the team holds a perinatal qualification, and what the bedroom is actually like. Ask each one who takes the birth classes and what they're qualified in. The answers vary more than the prices do.
Yes. The mom'z estate in Penedès is about sixty minutes from Barcelona and its airport, which keeps both the transfer and the distance to a major hospital short.
Menus are built with our pregnancy-nutrition specialist and cooked fresh on site, with cravings and aversions taken seriously rather than worked around.
Yes, a class every day, taught by childbirth educators, plus a dedicated pelvic health workshop. Not a talk about the retreat, working sessions on labour, breathing, the fourth trimester and feeding.
One during the stay, with additional treatments available on request.
First-time and second-time mothers come in almost equal measure. First-time mothers usually arrive with more questions and leave with more of them answered.
It's the most common hesitation we hear. What changes it is rarely the length, it's that for five days nothing on the schedule is for anybody else.
Yes, and it is more than the group chat, though the group chat is real and tends to outlast the pregnancy. Every guest keeps access to an online library: recorded knowledge sessions she can rewatch or share with her partner, and prenatal yoga sessions to do at home. Most of the preparation happens after you get back. See what the community looks like after a retreat.
mom'z currently runs retreats near Barcelona and near Lisbon, with occasional UK dates that need no flight at all. Full detail on solo babymoon destinations and current dates and rates.
If you take one thing from this: the decision that matters isn't Spain or Portugal or Somerset. It's whether the people running the week are qualified to prepare you for birth, and whether you will sleep. Everything else is a view.
