Pregnancy Retreats in Portugal

The classes prepare you for the birth you are actually planning: caesarean or home birth, epidural or not, however you intend to feed. Preparation, never prescription.

The part nobody costs properly is the drive.

Portugal's pregnancy retreats sit mostly out along the Atlantic, in the surf towns and the coastal villages, and the photographs are honest. What the photographs do not tell you is how long you will be in a car after you land, and at thirty weeks pregnant that is the thing that decides how the first day feels.

The short version. Lisbon is the arrival point for almost all of it. mom'z runs its Portuguese retreats at a private estate about thirty minutes from Lisbon airport, transfers included. Five days, from €2,450 on a preferred rate for a shared room. Women come from 14 to 35 weeks, and ever retreat holds space for an intimate group of up to 15 women.

Why Portugal, if you are flying from the UK?

Because the flight is short and the weather is reliable without being punishing. London to Lisbon is under three hours. From Paris, Amsterdam or Zurich it is shorter still.

And because the Atlantic behaves differently from the Mediterranean in high summer. The coast around Lisbon stays breezy when inland Spain and Italy are sitting above thirty-five degrees, and heat is felt differently when you are pregnant. If you are booking August and you are already uncomfortable at home, that matters more than the pool does.

Where in Portugal do pregnancy retreats actually happen?

Portugal Pregnancy Retreat Destination

Three areas, and they are not interchangeable.

Around Lisbon and its coast, which is where mom'z runs. A private estate with an art garden, deep planting, a saltwater pool and en-suite rooms, about thirty minutes from the airport.

Further up the coast around Ericeira and the surf towns, where several of the specialist operators are based.

And the Algarve, further south, further from a major airport, and hotter in summer.

Wherever you look, ask three things before you look at the photographs. How long the transfer from the airport actually takes, door to door. How far the nearest hospital with maternity care is. And whether the group is pregnant women only, or a general wellness group that accepts pregnant guests. Those three answers separate the whole category, and only one of them is usually on the website.

What does a day look like?

Mornings open with prenatal yoga, taught by teachers with pregnancy-specific training. Then a birth class, led by childbirth educators, on what women actually ask about: labour, breathing, the fourth trimester, feeding. There is a pelvic health workshop during the stay, which is the session most guests say they did not know they needed.

Meals are built with our pregnancy-nutrition specialist and cooked fresh on site, with cravings and aversions taken seriously rather than worked around. One pregnancy massage. Afternoons belong to the pool, the garden, or the bed.

Evenings belong to the group. That is the part that is hardest to photograph and the part women write to us about afterwards.

The classes prepare you for the birth you are actually planning: caesarean or home birth, epidural or not, however you intend to feed. Preparation, never prescription.

Gentle, regular activity in an uncomplicated pregnancy is supported by the NHS and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and everything physical is adapted by trimester.

"This retreat made me feel much better prepared even though this is round number 3. It was genuinely perfect." Katie, USA, momz.eu review

What about medical care while I am there?

Ask before you book, not after.

mom'z currently chooses its estates within about thirty minutes of a major clinic with maternity care. Midwives are on call around the clock, and the retreat leader and coordinator are on site with the group for the whole stay. Ask any retreat you are considering the same two questions, and notice how long the answer takes.

Two practical things for UK travellers that none of the Portuguese retreat pages cover. A UK Global Health Insurance Card gives you access to state-provided healthcare in Portugal on the same terms as a Portuguese resident, but it is not travel insurance and it does not cover repatriation (NHS guidance on the GHIC). So check that your travel insurance explicitly covers pregnancy complications and the cost of care for a baby born early abroad, in the policy wording rather than the summary page. It usually costs a one-off of somewhere between fifteen and fifty euros.

When in pregnancy should I fly to Lisbon?

Most women come in the second trimester or early third, when energy tends to be better and travel more comfortable. mom'z currently welcomes women from 14 to 35 weeks.

On flying: the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists notes that in an uncomplicated pregnancy flying is not considered harmful. Most airlines restrict travel from around 37 weeks (32 for twins), and many ask for a doctor's or midwife's letter after 28 weeks. See also the NHS travel-in-pregnancy guidance.

The August dates fill first and they are the hottest. October is kinder, and the estate is quieter then.

Will I be the only one on my own?

No. Everyone arrives without a partner.

Worth saying plainly, because the name misleads people: a solo babymoon is not a retreat for single mothers. Most guests have a partner at home. Single mothers by choice come too, and by the first dinner nobody is keeping track of who is which.

It is the question nearly everyone asks and almost nobody says out loud. In practice the worry lasts until the first dinner. Women tell us afterwards that it was easier to say the true things to strangers walking the same path than to their closest friends.

What does a pregnancy retreat in Portugal cost?

mom'z retreats start at €2,450 for five days on a preferred rate for a shared room, all-inclusive on site: accommodation, all meals, all classes, a pregnancy massage, airport transfers, and round-the-clock care with midwives on call. Private rooms cost more. Flights are not included. Payment plans exist.

You will find Portuguese retreats at a range of prices, and the difference is rarely the building. It is who is teaching, how many women are in the room, and whether anyone with perinatal qualifications is there at all. Ask each one who takes the birth classes and what they are qualified in. The answers vary more than the prices do.

Frequently asked questions

How far is the retreat from Lisbon airport?

About thirty minutes, and the transfer is included in the price. You can land mid-morning and be lying down before lunch.

Are there pregnancy retreats in Portugal near a major city?

Yes. The mom'z estate sits close enough to Lisbon that both the transfer and the distance to a major hospital stay short.

Is the food actually designed for pregnancy?

Menus are built with our pregnancy-nutrition specialist and cooked fresh on site. Cravings and aversions are taken seriously rather than worked around.

Do the retreats include birth preparation?

Yes, a class every day, taught by childbirth educators. Not a talk about the retreat. A working class on labour, breathing, the fourth trimester and feeding.

Is this suitable for a first-time mother?

First-time and second-time mothers come in almost equal measure.

When are the Portugal dates?

They change through the year. Current dates are on dates and rates.

Do I need my doctor's approval?

We ask every guest to confirm with her midwife or doctor that travel and gentle activity are right for her pregnancy.

What happens after the retreat ends?

The group chat, mostly, and it tends to outlast the pregnancy. There are recorded knowledge sessions to keep, and prenatal yoga you can carry on at home. See what the community looks like after a retreat.
