The best babymoon destinations in Europe share four things: A short hop from a major airport. Weather that behaves in more than one season. A good hospital nearby that you will never think about again after this sentence. And streets that are flat.
Everything else is taste.
I have spent three years helping pregnant women travel. Our retreats run every month of the year, in three of the places below, for women anywhere from week 14 to week 35.
So this list is not written from a deckchair in June. It is written from knowing what a February arrival looks like.
One thing before the list. Half the internet talks about pregnancy travel like a hazard. The reality is friendlier: the RCOG considers flying safe in an uncomplicated pregnancy until around 37 weeks, airlines just want a short letter after 28, and Europe is Zika free.
Check in with your midwife. Get the letter. Book the trip.
Four tests, applied to every place we considered:

An hour inland from Barcelona airport the roads narrow, the vineyards start, and the noise stops.
This is old Catalan farmhouse country, and it holds its light all year: proper summer, soft bright winters where lunch outside in January is normal rather than lucky. Barcelona is close enough for a slow afternoon and far enough to forget.
This is where our Spanish retreats run, in a restored masia among the vines, every month of the year. I am biased in exactly the way that comes from watching it work in all twelve. More on pregnancy retreats in Spain.

Thirty minutes from Lisbon airport the Atlantic takes over: sea air, garden estates, a seafront promenade built for exactly the pace you now walk at.
Summer stays ten degrees kinder than inland Iberia. Winter rarely drops below a jacket. Sintra is up the hill for a slow morning by car.
Our Portuguese retreats run here, on a private estate with a saltwater pool, year round. More on pregnancy retreats in Portugal.

Ancient woodland, wild swimming lakes, open fires, and a kind of quiet England does better than anywhere. Bath is nearby for the spa-town afternoon.
If you live in the UK, the whole argument is the two-hour drive. If you are coming from further away, Somerset is what you imagined England was before you landed at Heathrow.
Our English retreats currently run near Frome on a 173-acre estate, all seasons. Winter here is a feature, not a compromise, if the house has fireplaces. Ours does. UK retreat or abroad: how to decide.
Deia and Soller sit between the Tramuntana mountains and the sea: stone villages that fill with walkers in spring and empty into something close to private in winter.
Late January brings the almond blossom. Locals treat it as normal. Visitors do not recover.
Mainland Europe's warmest winter and its most reliable shoulder seasons. Boardwalk trails run flat through the dunes for kilometres, and the sea stays swimmable into October.
Even January manages cafe terraces at lunch. The west near Lagos is the calm end.
Lakes suit some pregnancies better than coasts: no sand to trudge, ferries instead of hairpin drives, and water you look at rather than fight.
Como's lakefront towns are flat where it counts, an hour from two Milan airports. September is the famous month. Spring is the quiet secret.
Markets, long lunches, early nights. Provence rewards the pace pregnancy sets.
Spring and September are the postcard. October smells of woodsmoke, and the winter markets still run. Base yourself in one town, Aix or L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, rather than touring.
The answer to the winter babymoon. Madeira holds seventeen to twenty degrees while northern Europe does its worst.
A February trip here feels like a lie you get away with. Funchal's seafront and gardens carry the walking. The levada hikes will still be there next year.
A flat lakeside promenade that runs for kilometres, mountain air without altitude, and hotels that have been perfecting rest since the nineteenth century.
Swiss healthcare needs no introduction. The franc will introduce itself.
Gentler than you expect.
In the second trimester, everything on this list works, including from the US.
From around 28 weeks airlines want that short letter, so the sensible move is shorter flights. From the UK, all nine still work. From the US, go sooner or choose the one-direct-flight options.
Weeks 28 to 35, the near-and-flat logic wins: Penedes, Lisbon coast or Somerset. We host women at our retreats up to week 35, every month, so none of this is theory. See upcoming retreat dates.
Whenever you can go. Weeks 14 to 27 are the most energetic stretch for most women, and weeks 28 to 35 travel beautifully with a shorter flight and a letter for the airline.
No. You fly with a short fit-to-fly letter, most airlines carry singleton pregnancies to around 37 weeks, and a two-hour flight is nothing like a long haul. Pick from the near-and-flat end of this list and go.
Comfortably, and many of our guests do. Lisbon and Barcelona are among the shortest transatlantic hops there are, Europe is Zika free, and the hospital density means the safety question mostly answers itself.
Just a policy that names pregnancy, usually a one-off 15 to 50 euros. UK travellers should carry a GHIC too. Two minutes of admin, then forget it.
General information, not medical advice. Whatever week you are in, a quick check with your midwife or doctor before booking is all it takes.
